Top 4 area rug trends for 2021

Updated: Mar 31, 2022

We will continue to see an influx of a wide variety of area rugs into the residential interior design arena. Due to the popularity of hard surfaces in the last three years, an increased demand for area rugs to adorn those hard surfaces followed. That said rugs in different styles, various price points, and levels of quality have flooded the market. Here is what the trend menu looks like for 2021.

  1. ECO-FRIENDLY

A movement toward conscious choice has amped up the demand for friendlier alternatives to interact with nature. Given this, manufacturers focus on environmentally friendly, sustainable and recycled materials.

2021 will showcase

  • Recycled products. Various types of recycled materials are used in whole or in part in the manufacture of rugs

  • Plant based products. Eco-friendly flooring features such material as

    • Sisal- a rope-like material that comes from the sisalana, or agave plant which is native to Brazil, Mexico, and Africa. Sisal rugs give a unique homey feel to any space. Such carpets are highly durable and can easily withstand the load in places with high traffic.

    • Jute - is obtained from two plants, the Corchorus Olitorius and Corchorus Capsularis. These plants are native to the Indian subcontinent and are grown throughout the year. Jute rugs are woven from the woody center of the plant, and add a stylish element to home decor. These heavy-duty rugs are quite durable in low traffic areas, but since jute is a good absorbent, avoid areas with high humidity and potential for contamination.

2. MAXIMALISM

Whether carpet or rugs design, self-expression is one of the main principles of living space design in 2021. When choosing a area rug, do not be afraid to show your personality and boldly break the rules.

Crashing color combinations and conflicting patterns define the modern idea of maximalism.

3. VINTAGE

Surprisingly, a stylish base carpet can look like it was deliberately deprived of its expressive color, pattern, dense pile, and even thoroughly rubbed. In this case, we are not talking about any vintage, but an entirely new floor covering. In such products, the aged effect is achieved by special dyeing, and the pile is removed or sheared either chemically or mechanically.

4. CUT AND LOOP PILE

Cut-loop carpets are made by combining straight fibers with loop-like ones, achieving interesting geometric or abstract patterns. The combination of different types of buttonholes creates unique contrasting textures and patterns.

Since many modern design trends are heavily dependent on various textures, this carpet style will not lose its relevance in 2021.
